Comics Portfolio Reviews

What is a Portfolio Review?

A portfolio review is a CONFIDENTIAL report prepared by a comics industry specialist that provides comprehensive feedback on your submitted comics art in line with your professional aspirations. The review provides information on:

  • Editing character studies, concept art and comics layouts to make them the best they can be,
  • Refining your comic book and graphic novel covers and pin-ups so they pop, and
  • Preparing your portfolio so you can make the best impression when pitching to agents and publishers.

Who Are You?

  • An aspiring comics artist (ie. somebody who is interested in making comics yours career, but who has not been published or self-published)
  • An emerging comics artist (ie. somebody with one or two published or self-published comics works)
  • A developing comics artist (ie. somebody with three or four published or self-published comics works)
  • An established comics artist (ie. somebody with five or more published or self-published comics works) who wants to test themselves with new styles and in new genres
  • children’s book illustrator who is interested in transitioning from literary culture to pop culture and becoming a comics artist
  • A TV or film writer, storyboard artist or animator who is interested in transitioning to the comics medium and becoming a comics artist.

What Pieces Should I Include in a Portfolio Review?

Artists have the opportunity to submit up to twenty (20) full pages in their portfolios. These images can include:

  • Comic book or graphic novel covers
  • Pin up art
  • Finished sequential art pages for comic books, graphic novels or webcomics (one page = one piece; a spread = two pieces)
  • Roughs, pencils, inks and / or colours in development art
  • Character model sheets
  • Concept art
  • Backgrounds.

We advise each portfolio to be cohesive and to focus on one style or genre for a specific target audience (eg. children’s middle grade – ages 9 to 12 – graphic novels; superhero comic books).
